Jonathan studied our Level 3 Engineering Diploma at OBS. Here’s what he had to say about his experience!

1. What motivated you to enrol in our program?

After serving over two decades in the military, engineering solutions to complex problems was part of my everyday life. However, when I transitioned into civilian life, I quickly realised that employers often struggled to recognise or translate my military engineering experience into civilian qualifications. I knew I needed a formally recognised pathway to bridge that gap, and that motivated me to enrol with the Online Business School using my ELC Enhanced Learning Credits.

2. How would you describe your experience with Online Business School?

My experience with OBS was exceptional from start to finish. The support, guidance, and quality of instruction were second to none. The course material was clear, accessible, and directly relevant to the engineering roles I wanted to pursue. Even studying alongside full‑time work felt manageable because the structure was flexible and well thought out.

3. Why did you choose OBS?

I chose OBS because it offered a recognised, affordable, and flexible route to gaining the qualifications I needed. The ability to use my ELC funding, combined with the strong reputation OBS has for supporting military leavers, made it the perfect choice. It felt like a provider that genuinely understood the challenges of transitioning from military to civilian life.

4. How has the program helped you in your career or personal growth?

The program was the turning point in my civilian career. It validated the engineering knowledge I had built over 20+ years and gave me the recognised qualification employers were looking for. Since completing the course, I’ve progressed rapidly in civilian engineering and now manage a team of 12 engineers across a range of technical and operational situations. Personally, it gave me confidence — the sense that my skills did have value outside the military.

5. What did you do after completing your studies with OBS?

I used my OBS qualification directly for career progression. It opened doors that had previously been closed and allowed me to step into roles that matched my experience and capability. I did not pursue a top‑up degree immediately because the qualification itself was enough to secure the opportunities I was aiming for at the time.

6. What advice would you give to current or prospective students?

My advice is simple: commit to it. OBS gives you all the tools, support, and flexibility you need to succeed, but the real transformation comes from believing in yourself and putting in the work. If you’re transitioning from the military, don’t underestimate the value of your experience — OBS helps translate it into a qualification the civilian world understands. It was one of the best decisions I made.
