Being able to manage the behaviour of learners is likely to be one of the main concerns for all newly qualified teachers. If learners cannot be encouraged to follow appropriate behavioural guidelines whilst in the classroom, there will be little chance that they will achieve their learning outcomes. However, it should be realised that this is not just the territory of new teachers; there are many experienced teachers who have difficulty maintaining discipline and running well-controlled classes.Classroom control is a key teaching skill which requires the development of suitable strategies to deal with those learners who may be disruptive or who have difficulties which present problems to others. Depending upon the type of school or college, factors such as class size, social and psychological background, and learner age will all influence how challenging it will be for the teacher.Teachers will make many mistakes when first faced with issues of classroom control and this unit looks at why some of the more common problems arise and what techniques can be used in an attempt to deal with them. Having knowledge of a range of strategies to deal with such situations will prove invaluable to any new teacher.
