The hospitality industry is a large industry which is made up of those businesses that offer one or more of the following: provide accommodation, prepared food and beverage service and/or entertainment for the traveller. The hospitality industry is the 4th largest employer in the UK and has grown GVA (Gross Value Added) faster than any other industry since the economic downturn. The main segments or sectors within the hospitality industry are the food and beverage sector, the hotel and lodging (accommodation) sector and the events sector. Just like any other industry, the hospitality industry needs a regulatory framework to ensure that organisations are obeying the law and creating a safe and fair environment for their employers and customers. Regulatory bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive, The Information Commissioner’s Office and The Consumer Ombudsman, exercise a regulatory function which include imposing requirements, restrictions and conditions, setting standards in relation to any activity, and securing compliance, or enforcement. The hospitality industry also has several professional bodies and affiliations. A professional body, unlike a regulatory body, is usually a membership organisation and is not necessarily established on the basis of legal mandate but instead to provide support and advice on current issues. The British Hospitality Association and The Institute of Hospitality are both professional bodies. The hospitality industry shares many common operational processes within the different segments such as standard operating procedures and also common operational inspections such as food hygiene inspections.
