The aim of this unit is to develop the learner’s awareness of different forms of communication used in health and social care settings and its importance for effective service delivery.The unit first discusses key communication skills and how they can be applied within the context of health and social care. The first lessons will offer a number of theoretical approaches to communication in health and social care. A range of communication types used in the sector is described in detail.Next the unit focuses on the factors affecting healthcare and social care communications. The corresponding lessons include discussion on the main communication barriers, presentation of different communication means in the health and social care sector and discussion of confidentiality.The unit concludes with discussion on the ICT benefits and challenges for different health and social care stakeholders. Aspects associated with information privacy are also discussed in relation to previous and current legislation.
