There are many different terms and definitions when referring to companies who are behaving responsibly towards society and the environment. These terms include ‘sustainable businesses’ ‘responsible businesses’, ‘ethical businesses’, social responsible businesses’ as well as ‘Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)’ CSR is a concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in the business operations and in their interactions with stakeholders on a voluntary basis. It is about reporting back on the organisation’s economic, environmental and social performance, also known as the Triple Bottom Line. Instead, Sustainable Development is a way of looking how organisations can be more responsible in the short and long-term future. This for example, could include how organisations look to make positive changes to how they deal with their waste disposal, supply chains, developing new markets and communicating their sustainable plans to all their stakeholders. Many hotel and hospitality organisations have come up with a variety of innovative sustainability initiatives to become more responsible, such as recycling soap, volunteering in local communities or by offering the use of electric cars to their customers. There are many reasons why hospitality organisations should integrate CSR as part of their business strategy. Some of these reasons are consumer demand, gaining a higher market share, developing ethical codes, efficiency gains and keeping on the right side of the law. This leads to many benefits to the organisation such as increased productivity and profit, reduced operational costs, an increase of customer loyalty and employee retention as well as attracting investors and creating a competitive advantage. In addition, the environment and local community also benefits of a hotel or hospitality organisation’s CSR policy.
